Spotlight on UL Systems (Winter '24)

New Cast-In Device!

Twenty-one existing systems featuring the SpecSeal® Cast-In Firestop Device were recently updated to include the latest model numbers CD201GW, CD301GW, CD401GW and CD601GW. The new design allows extension tubes to snap into place without any need for cutting the tube and allows for simplified W Ratings. System Nos. F-A-0031, F-A-1117, F-A-1188, F-A-2203, F-A-2245, F-A-3055, F-A-5041, F-A-5045, F-A-7020, F-A-8036, F-B-2058 and F-B-2065 were all updated to include the new model numbers. A handful of systems, which include F-A-1110, F-A-1118, F-A-1181, F-A-2204 and F-A-2246, that previously required the use of packing material and sealant to achieve a W Rating now enjoy watertightness based solely on installation of the new device without any additional materials. F-A-1172, F-A-2286, F-B-1021 and F-B-2047 represent a final batch of systems that now benefit from L Rating and W Rating coverage with the new devices that was not previously provided with older models.

Collar System in V497 Wall Designs!

A recently developed system, W-L-2849, provides coverage for a max 4 in. diameter PVC or CPVC pipe installed within a V497 Wall and Partition Design from UL. This type of wall assembly allows gypsum board to be installed on only one side of the steel studs, requiring a firestop system specifically tested in this type of wall. The firestop system consists of a wrap strip collar utilizing SpecSeal® SSW1000EX Wrap Strip, which can be installed on either the finished or interior side of the wall assembly. The sealant installed as the smoke seal portion of the firestop can be either SpecSeal® Series SSS or LCI Sealant and the system allows a 1 Hr F Rating and 1/4 Hr T Rating.

Head-of-Wall Joint Systems featuring Cripple Walls...

STI was recently approached by a contractor to help address unique head-of-wall (HOW) joint conditions that they were encountering. These applications consisted of an additional section of gypsum wall, which is referred to as a cripple wall, installed at the HOW above the main wall assembly. An additional joint was present between the underside of the cripple wall and the primary wall assembly. There were no existing firestop systems within the UL directory for these unusual configurations, so the contractor partnered with STI to develop a solution. Two firestop systems were promulgated to address walls oriented in a parallel and perpendicular orientation relative to the fluted deck of the floor assembly via HW-D-0972 and HW-D-0973 respectively. The firestop systems consist of a combination of SpecSeal® ES Elastomeric Sealant and SpeedFlex® Track Top Gasket (TTG).
